8 Essential Schengen Visa Application Tips You Must Know
Ready to apply for a Schengen Visa and schedule your appointment? Here are 8 essential Schengen Visa application tips from my personal experience to help you avoid visa rejection. First, this guide is based on my own research and journey. However, I strongly recommend checking all details on the official website before making any decisions.

Here’s a list of important things you should know before applying for a visa, in addition to everything shared on the official website.
Planning Your Trip Itinerary Wisely
First, ensure your travel itinerary aligns with the embassy you’re applying through.
If you’re applying for a Schengen Visa from the French Embassy, but plan to visit multiple Schengen countries—like Belgium—you must spend the most days in France.
For example, if you’re travelling for 6 days, an ideal combination would be 4 days in France and 2 days in Belgium.
However, presenting an itinerary that shows fewer days in France than another country may lead to visa rejection during your appointment.
Get the Right Insurance Coverage
Next, secure travel insurance before applying for your Schengen Visa.
It’s best to get an Annual Multi-Trip policy for one year. Staysure is a recommended provider for this coverage. If you are over 50, click here to find the best insurance deals.
Changing Your Current Visa Application
Sometimes, your visa appointment date may not match your original travel plans.
For example, if you applied with a travel date of the 15th but your appointment is scheduled just a few days before or after, you must update your visa application.
I experienced this myself! In such cases, submit a revised application with your new travel dates and accommodation details.
Make sure to carry a fresh printed copy reflecting the updated information, ideally at least 15 days after your appointment.
Spouse’s Means of Subsistence
If your spouse is unemployed or lacks recent salary slips, you can still sponsor their stay.
Simply provide your last three months’ bank statements along with a valid marriage certificate as proof of financial support.
Travel and Accommodation Booking
Always book travel and accommodation with free cancellation options.
Appointment dates can vary widely, especially between peak summer and off-peak winter seasons.
You might not get an appointment exactly after 15, 30, or even 60 days. Therefore, flexible bookings help avoid financial loss if your plans change.
Bank Statement Requirements
Ensure your recent UK current account statement or traveller’s checks show sufficient funds.
You need a minimum of £55 per person per day for expenses in the Schengen area. Submit photocopies of the original documents. Also, make sure the documents are not older than one month.
Carry All Required Documents
Always carry printed copies of all documents listed in your Schengen visa application.
This includes a printed copy of your completed application form.
Entry Rules After Visa Approval
Once your visa is approved, you must enter the Schengen country where you applied first.
For example, if you applied through France, you must enter France before visiting other Schengen countries. However, you can change your travel dates and reschedule your trip freely after receiving your stamped visa. You may then travel to any Schengen country without restrictions.
I have noted all the points above based on my research. Please do your own research and carefully read the official website’s guidelines before attending your appointment.
